Car Disaster Prep Tips

It’s Preparedness Month! Disaster can strike at any moment, and we here at AA Muffler and Brakes know how important it is to be prepared for those moments. We have compiled a list of items to keep in your car as a “disaster preparedness kit.”

Before you gather the following supplies, first find a sealable container to store them in. It can be a ziplock bag, a canvas bag, a tupperware container, anything with a lid or other way of sealing it. Put these items in the container you choose and find a permanent spot to keep it in your car so that, in the event of an accident, you will know where it is.

  • Bottled water

  • A first aid kit that includes latex (or latex-free) gloves for treating open wounds

  • A sheet with relevant medical information about you and your family along with emergency numbers. Laminate the sheet for extra protection against spills or rain.

  • Flashlight (with extra batteries)

  • Thick Blanket

  • Road flare, reflectors, set of cones — something to alert other drivers/emergency services of your location

  • Dried and/or non-perishable foods

  • Jumper cables

  • Disposable camera to record any damage to your car for insurance purposes

  • Notepad (legal or letter sized) and pens or pencils

We also recommend that you carry a list of information such as:

  • Name

  • Driver’s License Number

  • Current Address

  • Phone number (yours and an emergency contact’s)

  • Your date of birth

  • The name of your insurance company, your policy number, and the company’s phone number

  • Your license plate number

  • The make, model, year, color, and VIN number of your vehicle

  • Proof of current insurance

And of course, the biggest precaution you can take as a driver to avoid any unexpected accidents is to take care of your vehicle. AA Muffler and Brakes offers free inspections and we carry tires from all the major brands! Stay safe on the roads, and be prepared for any emergency with AA Muffler and Brakes!
